What is Zune?
Zune is Microsoft portable MP3 media player will be launched this year (maybe November).
Zune is the brand and device name like iPod, and comes from the project Argo.
Zune is under Microsoft's new Entertainment & Devices Division, and is headed by, among others,
Robbie Bach, J Allard (Corporate Vice President and Chief XNA Architect), and Bryan Lee (Corporate
Vice President and CFO, Entertainment and Devices Division), which accounts for the division of
this project from the rest of Microsoft, similar to how the Xbox project was also strictly separated.
The Zune brand encompasses not only the device, but the software that will drive it, as well as a
movie, music and media service the Zune device family will use for acquiring, sharing, and discovery
of said media. Music will be the first angle of service that is launched, "connected entertainment"
being the ultimate goal.
Zune Tutorial:
Microsoft unveiled it's new media player which will arrive just in time for this holiday season. The
Zune will be available in three colors, feature Wi-fi, and will be able to share songs with other
Zunes which are nearby.
It will feature a 30GB hard drive, and a 3-inch screen. While no pricing information was released, it
has been rumored that Microsoft was hoping for a $299 price point.
"Zunes have wireless built in. Zunes can thus set up "ad-hoc"
(Zune to Zune) connections to one another.
This enables the following scenarios:
You can search for nearby Zune owners to interact with.
You can send them a song, album, etc... for a 3-day/3-play
trial listen. Songs come over with metadata and album art
(neat). After the 3 days or 3 plays are up, the song gets
deleted from the Zune on the next sync, but the info on the
song stays in a "journal" on your PC for later purchase or
acquisition.
You can send them photos for unlimited viewing (and these
can sync back onto the recipient's PC). The wireless happens
to be wifi (802.11 b/g) but Zunes will not (at launch) connect
to the internet via your home base station network. Zunes
can not download songs over the air from the internet service.
Zunes cannot act as telephones or personal teleporters."
